The following contains excerpts from the book Out of the Crisis (W. Edwards Deming).
At our music school in Odessa, Texas we believe that music is more than sound, it is relationships. In Leadership and Management, relationships matter. “The aim of this book is transformation of the style of American management…failure of management to plan for the future and to foresee problems has brought about waste of manpower, of materials, and of machine-time, all of which raise the manufacturer’s cost and price that the purchaser must pay…improvement of the system, downstream or upstream, is the responsibility of management to perceive and to act on.”
This has been one of the most important management/leadership books written in the past half-century. References have been made to this book by other leadership books I have read.
Deming’s main thesis is that continual improvement on the systems of production yields both quality and quantity. The idea in America, at the time of his writing, was that a company had to choose one or the other. He believed this was a false premise. When continual improvement upon systems is the focus, this in turn causes more efficiency and less waste. Therefore, productivity becomes faster while, at the same time, quality is maintained.
Our music school believes in creating systems that work best for our students through teaching core competencies. If you are interested in music jobs and employment in Odessa, Texas that forsters this kind of discipline, we encourage you to get involved.
This concept is one that I strongly believe in. I have read about it in the leadership philosophies of basketball coach John Wooden. He believed that continual improvement of ‘the basics’ (without concern for whether the team would win or lose) should be the main focus. As a result of focusing the player’s attention on their own personal and corporate performance improvement, the games became secondary. They, of course, became national champions.
Deming’s book is the application of this philosophy applied to business leadership.
“Improvement of quality transfers waste of man-hours and of machine-time into the manufacture of good products and better service…when we improve quality we also improve productivity.”
“The consumer is the most important part of the production line. Quality should be aimed at the needs of the consumer, present and future…continual improvement of processes is essential.”
At our music school in Odessa, Texas we strongly believe in continual incremental progress, which ultimately produces exponential results. If you are looking for music jobs or employment in Odessa, Texas where these values are honored, we encourage you to become a part of our growing influence.
“There is no substitute for teamwork and good leaders of teams to bring consistency of effort, along with knowledge…Management that faces seriously the following questions will perceive the needs of an overall integrated plan. 1) Where do you hope to be five years from now? 2) How may you reach this goal? By what method?
One of the foundational tenets we hold at our music school in Odessa, Texas is that music fosters relationships and teamwork. This is best exhibited through students participating in ensembles. We offer music jobs and employment in Odessa, Texas that encourages ensemble playing.
“What is needed is improvement of the process, by reduction of variation, or by change of level, or both.”
The 14 Points for Management:
- Create constancy of purpose toward improvement of product and service.
- Adopt the new philosophy. We are in a new economic age.
- Cease dependence on inspection to achieve quality…by building quality into the product in the first place.
- Minimize total cost.
- Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service.
- Institute training on the job.
- Help people and machines and gadgets to do a better job.
- Drive out fear.
- Break down barriers between departments.
- Eliminate slogans…such exhortations only create adversarial relationships. Eliminate work standards (quotas)…substitute leadership.
- Eliminate management by numbers, numerical goals. Substitute leadership.
- The responsibility of supervisors must be changed from sheer numbers to quality. Remove barriers that rob people of their right to satisfaction of workmanship.
- Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement.
- Put everybody in the company to work to accomplish the transformation.
“As long as management is quick to take credit for a firm’s successes but equally swift to blame its workers for its failures, no surefire remedy for low productivity can be expected…If you treat…workers as human beings with ordinary human needs and values, they react like human beings. Once the superficial, adversarial relationship between managers and workers is eliminated, they are more likely to pull together during difficult times and to defend their common interest in the firm’s health.”
Respect is one of our foundational tenets at our music school in Odessa, Texas. Where there is mutual respect, there are successful relationships. If you want to be a part of an organization that insists on mutual respect, and are looking for music jobs and employment in Odessa, Texas, then we hope you will reach out to us.
“The aim of leadership should be to improve the performance of man and machine, to improve quality, to increase output, and simultaneously to bring satisfaction of workmanship to people. Put in a negative way, the aim of leadership is not merely to find and record failures of men, but to remove the causes of failure: to help people to do a better job with less effort.”
“Advantages of stability or statistical control. A process that is stable, in statistical control, presents a number of advantages over instability:
- The process has an identity; its performance is predictable.
- Costs are predictable.
- Regularity of output is an important by-product.
- Productivity is at a maximum (costs at a minimum).
- Costs diminish as quality improves
- The effects of changes in the system can be measured with greater speed and reliability.
At our music school in Odessa, Texas, we hope to help students continually improve, participate in ensembles (teamwork) and learn the values of honor for one another. If you are looking for music jobs or employment in Odessa, Texas then this is the place for you.
