At Dulce School of Music we believe that music is more than sound, it is relationships. In our fast-paced, technologically-driven culture, it is easy to get distracted by activities that are less than human. In order to recapture foundational elements to the human species, we must prioritize activities that speak to our core values and personal enrichment. When we build our lives on things that create intrinsic value, things that are often intangible, they produce the greatest results.
As we become involved in the study and process of making music, whether we realize it or not, we are touching the very fabric of universal structure. Forefront science shows that the universe is comprised of strands of vibrating energy, in other words, frequency. The entirety of music is, itself, various forms of frequency. Our involvement in making music causes us to interact with our own brains and bodies to produce frequencies. When we make music with others, in relationships, we can experience synergistic effects through this collaboration.
In acoustics, there is a phenomenon that deals with the power of agreement, or conversely, disagreement. To use a couple of loudspeakers, by way of example, if the cone of one is going out, while the other is going in, the waveforms that both are producing are said to be ‘out of phase’ and actually cancel each other out. This is known as ‘phase cancellation.’ However, if they are going in the same direction, they double their amplitude. In other words, they are twice as loud. This analogy has musical, as well as leadership and philosophical, implications: agreement and unity creates exponential power.
When music is seen, not just as ‘sound for sound’s sake,’ but as the opportunity to unite in concert with one another in collaborative creativity, positive relationships are formed and community enrichment takes place. The value of being in harmony with one’s self and others brings us back to foundational, core qualities that are uniquely human.
Our Dallas music school is uniquely designed to offer quality music lessons online to help students obtain the benefits of studying music, without having to leave home to do so. As the Metroplex has become increasingly congested, we realize that students and parents would appreciate an opportunity to have music education at the highest level, available from their home environment.
The benefits of studying music in our Dallas music school are many. A few are as follows: confidence-building, communication skills, focus, eye/hand coordination, left/right coordination, brain-plasticity, interpersonal cooperation, pattern awareness, personal discipline, setting and obtaining long-range goals, learning to listen attentively, awareness and appreciation of beauty, conflict/resolution, the ‘Mozart effect,’ historical awareness and the study of Humanities/Art history, multimedia/inter-artistic disciplines, creative/independent thinking, mathematics, the list goes on.
Many people do not know that Albert Einstein played the violin his whole life and enjoyed playing string quartets with his friends throughout his life. He once famously remarked, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” In today’s culture of STEM-based learning (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) music and the arts are sidelined. However, modern analysis has shown that the study of music is highly effective in brain development. It actually helps us think differently.
When a music student plays an instrument, many don’t realize that they are engaging all three core learning aptitudes and brain stimuli simultaneously. Visual, Aural and Kinesthetic learning styles are all happening at once. Music uniquely does this.
When reading music notation, the student’s brain is translating and processing that information in two different ways: an imagination of what it will sound like, and an imagination of the motions the body will make to produce that sound. The famous Juilliard teacher, Ivan Galamian, called this process correlation. In addition to this, once the sound is created, the ear hears it and judges whether or not the produced sound matches the imagined sound, initially desired. At this point, instantaneous correction and adjustments take place to bring the produced sound into conformity with the imagined sound.
All of this happens within milliseconds and the brain activity that is happening through this process uniquely develops a new aptitude for being able to think with spacial awareness. In other words, music helps students learn to think ‘out of the box.’
Our Dallas music school offers three tracks to give students options that will fit their unique goals. First, our entry level is one lesson per week for those who want a taste of the benefits music can bring. Secondly, we offer three lessons per week for those who want to establish the cadence, habit, and rigor to improve quickly. And our third track is for those who want to pursue a professional level, with five lessons per week. Each one of these options can be in a 30, 45, or 60-minute session, based upon the aptitude and focus of the student.
Lowell and Kathy Hohstadt are the founders of Dulce School of Music and have rich backgrounds in teaching, performing, creating and leading music. Lowell is a Juilliard and Eastman graduate with a background in performance and composition, ranging from Classical to Jazz, Rock, R&B and other contemporary styles. Kathy is a graduate of the University of Michigan and has taught a studio of successful students for over thirty years. Their combined expertise has uniquely qualified them to have gathered a team of teachers who hold their standards of excellence and ethos of quality music-making. This equates to a high-level teaching experience for students in a wide range of musical disciplines.
Dulce School of Music initially established a music school in Odessa, Texas, then quickly expanded to Midland, Texas and their Dallas music school offering.
Our Dallas music school gives students quality lessons in Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, Guitar, Drums, Voice, as well as more advanced training in Song-writing, Music Production, Composition/Arranging, and Music Technology.
As we have stated, the value of studying music goes beyond the process of learning music itself, and has long-range applications for brain-development, interpersonal relationships, emotional health, and general well-being.
