We believe that music is for everyone. Whether you are young, old, or whatever musical style you like, we can help you develop the skills you need to succeed. We believe that music is more than sound, it is relationships. When delving into the study of music and the arts, you are accessing a part of the brain that is uniquely different than the standard academic track of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
There is a part of our lives that is being starved when we bypass the kind of training music can give. Albert Einstein famously said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Many people don’t realize that he played violin his whole life and enjoyed playing string quartets with his friends throughout his career. Is it a coincidence that he was one of the most important thinkers in modern history? Perhaps his participation in music had something to do with his approach to his significant scientific breakthroughs.
Among the many benefits studying music can bring, a few are: creative/independent thinking, mathematics, spacial awareness, left-brain/right-brain symbiosis, linear analytic thinking merging with pattern mosaic thinking, the development of inter-artistic disciplines, the list goes on.
Dulce School of Music was founded by Lowell and Kathy Hohstadt, who both have advanced degrees in music from the nation’s top music schools, with many years of combined experience in teaching, performing, creating, and leading in musical settings. They began in Odessa, Texas, quickly expanding to Midland, Texas and Dallas, Texas.

We offer a wide range of options to meet a variety of interests. Whether you are interested in an entry-level exposure to the benefits of music, or you have professional ambitions to reach the highest levels of proficiency, we have options to meet you at your desired level of involvement.
Our entry level program is a single lesson per week, for those who are just starting and want to get a taste of what it is like to begin to acquire musical skills. Next, we have an intermediate level of three times per week to establish the cadence, habit, and rigor to improve quickly. Finally, we have five lessons per week to develop at the highest professional level. We offer these options in 30, 45, and 60-minute lesson-lengths to uniquely accommodate the aptitude and focus of the student.
Lowell and Kathy’s unique and diverse musical backgrounds have allowed them to gather into the school teachers matching their standards of excellence and capabilities to train in the areas of piano, voice, guitar, drums, violin, viola, cello, song-writing, music production, composition and arranging.
Our teachers care deeply about the comprehensive development of their students and are dedicated to their progress and bringing them the joy of participating in the beauty of making music.
Giving students of all ages the opportunity of immersion in the arts at our music school in Midland causes long-range benefits in more areas than simply making music. Studying music serves to develop the student’s brain in a combination of the three main areas of learning: visual, aural, and kinesthetic.
When a student reads music notation, their imagination must be involved in creating an internal ‘sound picture’ of what the music should sound like, while simultaneously creating a physical imagination of how to execute that information through physical motion. Once they play or sing the notes, their listening skills must quickly evaluate what has been produced to see if it matches their original internal imagination. This process involves, simultaneously, the brain’s capacity of seeing, listening, and doing (visual, aural, and kinesthetic). Music uniquely provides this kind of brain stimuli, which is why recent studies have shown that students, who are involved with developing their musical skills, score significantly higher in their school studies.
There is a common misconception in current modern-day music making, that reading music is unnecessary. However, high level graduate and post-graduate music programs in our country, ones that are known to teach contemporary popular styles, universally expect students to proficiently read notation. It is a discipline that is centuries old and still has significant value in all musical styles and genres.
The successful integration of ‘playing by ear’ (or improvisation) with reading music notation gives the music student the best, most comprehensive, training from which to eventually lead ensembles, create their own compositions and arrangements, or any other artistic direction they desire.
At our music school in Midland, we help students become fluid in reading, improvisation, and performing, which again correlates to the above-mentioned visual, aural, and kinesthetic approaches to musical and brain development.
Another highly important concept we aspire to giving students at our music school in Midland is the opportunity to collaborate in groups and ensembles.
Making music together requires that students not only play successfully individually, experiencing the process mentioned above of self-evaluation in performance, but also that of simultaneous interaction with others who are doing the same thing. This activity of listening awareness develops a conspicuously missing ingredient in today’s generation: empathy.
Learning to listen is perhaps one of the most important life-skills one can seek to master. Its value extends past musical endeavors into leadership skills, interpersonal relationships, and overall personal well-being.
Listening is quite different from hearing. Many people can hear without listening. Listening requires attentiveness and focus. When students are involved in relating to others, empathetically listening and collaborating through making music with them, the highly valuable life-skill of relating to others is heightened.
