The following contains excerpts from the book, Never Eat Alone (Keith Ferrazzi).

Making a difference in people’s lives always starts with relationships.
“The secret…is in reaching out to other people…what distinguishes highly successful people from everyone else is the way they use the power of relationships – so that everyone wins…helping friends connect with other friends.”
This book was referenced by Brené Brown in ‘Dare to Lead’ as a good example of how to use social media to our advantage.
There are a number of things I have known about the use of social media, but Ferrazzi shows an expanded use along with the mindset and methodology of incorporating the disciplines of ‘connectivity’ into a lifestyle and ideology for growth.
“Success in Life = (the people you meet) + (what you create together)…Your network is your destiny…We are the people we interact with.”

“When it comes to meeting people, it’s not only whom you get to know but also how and where you get to know them…Contrary to popular business wisdom, I don’t believe there has to be a rigid line between our private and public lives…Make a list of the things you’re most passionate about. Use your passions as a guide to which activities and events you should be seeking out: 1) Fifteen minutes and a cup of coffee, 2) Conferences, 3) Invite someone to share a workout or a hobby (golf, chess, stamp collecting, a book club, etc.), 4) A quick early breakfast, lunch, or dinner together, 5) Invite someone to a special event, 6) Entertaining at home. I view dinner parties at home as sacred, 7) Volunteering.”

“Good follow-up, alone elevates you above 95 percent of your peers. The follow-up is the hammer and nails of your networking tool kit. In fact, FOLLOW-UP IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS IN ANY FIELD…Give yourself between twelve and twenty-four hours after you meet someone to follow up…Why go to all the trouble of meeting new people if you’re not going to work on making them a part of your life? What to include in your follow-ups:
- Always express your gratitude.
- Be sure to include an item of interest from your meeting or conversation – a joke or a shared moment of humor.
- Reaffirm whatever commitments you both made – going both ways.
- Be brief and to the point.
- Always address the thank-you note to the person by name.
- Use e-mail and snail mail. The combination adds a personalized touch.
- After e-mailing, send requests to connect through social media.
- Timeliness is key. Send them as soon as possible after the meeting or interview.
Make follow-up a habit. Make it automatic.”
“Personal contacts are the key to opening doors – not such a revolutionary idea. What is surprising, however, is that of those personal connections that reaped dividends for those in the study, only 17 percent saw their personal contact often – as much as they would if they were good friends – and 55 percent saw their contact only occasionally. And get this, 28 percent barely met with their contact at all. In other words, it’s not necessarily strong contacts, like family and close friends, that prove the most powerful; to the contrary, often the most important people in our network are those who are acquaintances…Acquaintances, in short, represent a source of social power, and the more acquaintances you have, the more powerful you are.”
We are always interested in connecting with new relationships who are interested in serving our communities by teaching music in our music school in Midland, Texas. If you are looking for music jobs in Midland, Texas and the Permian Basin, we hope you will reach out to us.
“Becoming front and center in someone’s mental Rolodex is contingent on one invaluable little concept: repetition.
- People you’re contacting to create a new relationship need to see or hear your name in at least three modes of communication – by, say, an e-mail, a phone call, and a face-to-face encounter – before there is substantive recognition.
- Once you have gained some early recognition, you need to nurture a developing relationship with a phone call or e-mail at least once a month.
- If you want to transform a contact into a friend, you need a minimum of two face-to-face meetings out of the office.
- Maintaining a secondary relationship requires two to three pings a year.
- Social media pings (status updates, retweets, comments, etc.) are terrific for ongoing relationship maintenance, especially for the fringe of your network, but they don’t replace the need for one-to-one pinging with the people in your highest-priority network, those people connected to your current goals.
Standard advice on acknowledging the events in people’s lives suggests sending Christmas cards…The holidays, in my opinion, are not the best time to focus your pinging energies…My personal favorite pinging occasion remains birthdays.
“The most common and unfortunate misconception about networking these days is that connecting broadly to the Fringe somehow devalues your real friendships. Nonsense! The fact is, network management scales easily, while intimacy almost always requires one on one. Most critics conflate the two…What you see shapes how you change. And in social media, as in the real world, I’d add this: Where you look shapes what you see. So find ways to build diversity into your online network.

“Taming the LinkedIn Beast: It’s up to you to vet each and every request so that if someone comes to you and says, ‘Would you introduce me?,’ you’re in a position to evaluate whether the connection would be of mutual benefit…Connect only to people whom you know enough about to feel confident introducing them to others in your network. They don’t need to have passed a background check, but they should be more than a random data point…Master the art of introductions on LinkedIn and you’ll quickly ascend to super-connector status…And when you reach out on the site, show people you’ve read their profile by directly referencing it…Introduce mindfulness in your social media strategy.
“To build trust online, beyond that limited circle of people you can touch personally, you need to find a way to reveal your humanity in bits and bytes…Generosity + Vulnerability + Accountability + Candor = Trust…Also, try to create your own ‘schtick,’ for lack of a better word – a content brand defined by that thing you do that no one else does…you know you’re getting there when your news feeds and e-mail in-box are frequently delivering conversations or new contact requests from people whom you don’t know well but with whom you share something remarkable – a common interest, a complementary capability, and so on.”
“Marketers and connectors alike take heed: Be interesting! Virtually everyone new you’re meeting in a situation is asking themselves a variation on one question: ‘Would I want to spend an hour eating lunch with this person?’…Being known is just notoriety. But being known for something is entirely different. That’s respect…What will set you apart from everybody else is the relentlessness you bring to learning and presenting and selling your content.”

“Content creators have always been in high demand. They get promotions…So how did they get that way? The easiest route is by expertise.”
