I read Who Moved My Cheese? a number of years ago and this sequel, written quite a bit later, seeks to answer the questions left to the imagination in the original book. The author tries to answer why some people are afraid to move into the unknown, to challenge their preconceived ideas of truth. He provides ways to overcome these obstacles, in order to move forward.

The two mini-persons in the maze of the first book were named Hem and Haw. Haw found success through a series of challenges, ultimately making his way to newfound cheese, while Hem stayed behind due to the following convictions:
- I have to find more cheese. If I don’t, I’ll die.
- The maze is a dangerous place, full of dark corners and blind alleys.
- It’s up to me. I’m on my own.
All of these statements ended up being proven untrue. He found a friend to help him, who gave him apples to eat instead of cheese, and they ultimately made it to the outside together by going down a blind alley and dark corner.
Hem’s first realization was that “Old beliefs do not lead you to new cheese.” He was carrying around a hammer and chisel, which he and Hem had used to break through walls. As he travelled through the maze, not only did he begin to realize that the old tools were not helping, but that they were also heavy carry around with him.

Hem, becoming frustrated and discouraged on his journey, began asking questions introspectively, “Why didn’t’ he go with Haw to look for New Cheese? Because Haw was looking at things differently – and Hem couldn’t see what Haw saw. His own thoughts had kept him there…because he trusted that they were true…The bars on his windows were his old thoughts, thoughts he trusted were true, but which actually prevented him from venturing out into the Maze…An Old Belief Can Hold You Prisoner…He wrote another note on the wall: Some Beliefs Can Hold You Down. Other Beliefs Can Lift You Up.”
